Nancy Holt’s Project Files Digitized at the Archives of American Art

The papers of Nancy Holt and Robert Smithson are held at the Smithsonian Institution's Archives of American Art. Generously donated and bequeathed by Nancy Holt, these extensive collections are an invaluable resource for research into the lives, work, and ideas of two of the twentieth century's most significant artists.

Since Holt's papers joined the Archives in 2021, an increasing amount of material has been made accessible to researchers, most recently the Project Files, digitized this year in 2026. This series documents more than 50 projects developed by Holt from the late 1970s to the late 1990s, offering insights into her working processes and the development of her ideas from initial conception through to completion.

The projects range from Holt's System Works, such as Ventilation System and Pipeline, which make visible the infrastructure of everyday life, to public sculptures such as Astral Grating, created for New York's Metropolitan Transportation Authority. The files also document her ambitious, unfinished Sky Mound, alongside projects yet to be realized, including High Voltage (1982), proposed for the Brooklyn Bridge in New York, and Solar Web (1984–99), developed for Santa Monica Beach in California.

The Project Files bring together correspondence, proposals, conceptual drawings, studies, photographs, site surveys, engineering plans, and records of funding and expenditure. These materials reveal the depth of research, planning, experimentation, and collaboration involved in Holt's artistic practice.

The Nancy Holt Estate records extend across approximately 64.4 linear feet and include personal and professional correspondence, writings, notebooks, photographs, and documentation of her stewardship of Robert Smithson's legacy.

The digitization of the Project Files opens new possibilities for scholarship, making the evolution of Holt's ideas accessible to researchers around the world.
