In 1985 Nancy Holt was invited, alongside Vito Acconci and Marisol Escobar, to develop a sculpture for the C. W. Post campus of Long Island University, New York. The site was an abandoned swimming pool that had been filled with earth. Holt's proposal, Dripping Fountain, comprised sixteen units of curved black steel piping arranged around the former pool. The pipes formed inverted U-shaped structures of varying heights and widths, suggesting an arrangement through which water could drip. The drawings specify quarter-inch black steel pipes with half-inch threaded connections. Holt also made a model for the project, documented in photographs taken in her studio. The project remains unrealized.
