Hydra's Head

Nancy Holt
1974
Graphite pencil on paper
18 x 24 in. (45.7 x 61 cm)

In 1974, Nancy Holt was commissioned to create a temporary site-responsive sculpture as part of Artpark’s seasonal artist residency program in Lewiston, upstate New York. Beside the Niagara River, she sited six pools of water arranged in the pattern of the constellation Hydra in the work Hydra’s Head and this drawing maps out the sculpture. Drawing was important to Holt, and as her sculpture developed, so did her drawing practice, which she used to think through and articulate her vision.
