Untitled map drawing for "Sun Tunnels"

Nancy Holt
ca. 1975
Colored pencil and tape on map
Two parts: 27 x 56 in. (68.6 x 142.2 cm) each

Nancy Holt’s landmark Sun Tunnels was developed over a three-year period. Based on precise astronomical calculations, the concrete tunnels were positioned to frame the rising and setting sun during the summer and winter solstices. Circular perforations puncture their surfaces, allowing sunlight and moonlight to project specific star constellations into the tunnel interiors. Holt carefully planned every detail through drawings, including the work’s location and sight lines, using the tunnels themselves as viewing instruments that structure perception through alignment, scale, and duration.
