Locating No. 2

Nancy Holt
1972
Video, black and white, sound
Duration: 14 minutes

Nancy Holt’s Locating No. 2 is an experimental video made in 1972. Holt talks with the artist Jerry Clapsaddle as they watch a recording of a view of parked vehicles in front of a building, their vision framed through a 12-inch tube that is moved systematically back and forth across the screen. The pair discuss what they see, speculating on what might be  beyond the edges of the circle.

Locating No. 2 develops from Holt’s Locator sculptures, and precedes the 1973 videos Going Around in Circles and Zeroing In, as well as the 1974 video-sculpture Points of View, that likewise explore a view seen through a circular apparatus. The video was distributed by Castelli/Sonnabend Tapes and Films, a collaboration between Leo Castelli Gallery and Sonnabend Gallery to promote and distribute art films and videos.
