This is one of two photocollages made by Nancy Holt in which she places black paper over photographs of locations in New York City, restricting the image so that it is viewed through a circle. The image depicts the East Village at the intersection of St. Mark’s Place (East 8th Street) and Second Avenue, a prominent corner in the neighborhood, showing St. Marks Cinema, a long-running second-run movie theater, and Majestic, a men’s clothing store. Holt used part of this collage for her contribution to the catalogue for c. 7,500, a landmark exhibition curated by Lucy Lippard in 1973 at the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts).
