Throughout her five decades of artmaking, drawing was fundamental to Nancy Holt’s creative process. She tested ideas on the page, developing technical details as she refined her concepts. These drawings relate to the site-responsive sculpture Annual Ring (1980–81), currently located on the campus of Saginaw Valley State University, Michigan. Together, they detail the structure and orientation of the sculpture, demonstrating Holt’s attentiveness to specific astronomical events.

Annual Ring extends Holt’s longstanding investigation of sightlines, orientation, and the relationship between human scale and cosmic space. Developed during a period when she was adapting concerns to public commissions, the sculpture brings astronomical observation into a civic setting while maintaining a direct relationship to the landscape and sky.
