Cyclops

Robert Smithson
1961
Ink on paper
24 × 18 in. (61 × 45.7 cm)

In 1961, Robert Smithson produced a number of detailed ink drawings focused on mythological figures. The Cyclops recurs across his work in multiple forms, appearing in this 1961 drawing on paper, in a 1964 wall-based sculpture, and in a 1971 essay titled “Art Through the Camera’s Eye.” In the latter, Smithson imagines a horror film set in a camera store, drawing on the Cyclops myth and featuring a clerk named Ulysses. In Greek mythology, the Cyclopes are one-eyed giants, known for their immense strength and, in some traditions, their role as master craftsmen.
