Eighteen examples of Nancy Holt’s photographic series “Light and Shadow Photo Drawings” (1978) are on show at Art Basel Miami Beach, at Parra & Romero Gallery (Booth H3 in the Galleries Sector), from December 7 – December 10, 2017.
Nancy Holt’s investigation of investigation of optical phenomena in the 1970s led to a series of interior works, including this photographic series. The “Light and Shadow Photo Drawings” were shot on 35mm black and white film and depict carefully constructed compositions created in the studio by projecting light through cut out shapes, including holes and curves. The images convey a powerful sense of space and evoke solar and lunar phenomena, such as eclipses, corona and penumbra.
Shown in the image above is “Light and Shadow Photo Drawing (20)”. All the works on show at Art Basel Miami Beach are from the Holt-Smithson Foundation.
Nancy Holt is represented by Parafin Gallery, London.
